The Cheetahs have pulled off one of the most significant signings in their history, securing double Rugby World Cup winner Faf de Klerk on a two-year deal. The veteran Springbok scrumhalf will join the Bloemfontein-based side from June 2026, bringing with him a wealth of international experience and a proven winning pedigree. Central to Springbok success With 60 caps for the Springboks, De Klerk has been a central figure in the modern era of Springbok success.

Renowned for his aggressive defence, sharp tactical kicking, and quick service at the base of the ruck, he played a key role in South Africa’s Rugby World Cup triumphs in 2019 and 2023. The 34-year-old has enjoyed a distinguished club career, featuring for Yokohama Canon Eagles, Sale Sharks and the Lions, earning accolades including a Premiership Player of the Season nomination during his time in England. He was also instrumental in the Springboks’ series victory over the British & Irish Lions in 2021, further cementing his reputation as one of the world’s elite scrumhalves.

Major boost Cheetahs management hailed the signing as a major boost for the team, highlighting De Klerk’s leadership qualities and ability to influence matches at the highest level. “We are beyond excited to welcome Faf to the Cheetahs family,” said the Cheetahs. “His tenacity on the field and his leadership off it are exactly what we need as we continue to compete at the highest level.

Faf is a player who changes the tempo of a game, and we know our supporters are eager to see him in the orange jersey.” The Cheetahs, who are coached by Springbok great Frans Steyn, currently have no Springboks among their squad.
