After years of speculation and sporadic updates, the project has officially got a director, confirming that the long-discussed follow-up starring Will Smith and Michael B.

Jordan is actively moving forward. I Am Legend 2 director officially confirmed During a press tour for the upcoming Netflix series Man on Fire, filmmaker Steven Caple Jr. confirmed to Collider that he is officially directing I Am Legend 2 for Warner Bros. This announcement is a concrete step toward production for the highly anticipated sequel.

The confirmation of Caple Jr. comes years after a sequel was first announced in 2022. Previous reports had indicated the director was in talks, but the status remained unofficial until now. I Am Legend 2 director is best known for directing Creed II and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and his involvement brings both franchise experience and an existing working relationship with Michael B.

Jordan, who is set to star in the sequel. Jordan will appear alongside Will Smith, who led the original 2007 film. The sequel will make an important creative change by following the alternate ending of the first film rather than its theatrical version.

In theaters, Smith’s character, Robert Neville, sacrifices himself. However, the alternate ending reveals that the infected are not mindless, which aligns more closely with Richard Matheson’s original 1954 novel and allows Neville’s story to continue. Returning writer Akiva Goldsman has also hinted at the possible film’s direction.

“This will start a few decades later than the first,” he said, describing a world where nature begins to reclaim cities like New York. “You see how the earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens?” Despite being in development, I Am Legend 2 doesn’t have a release date yet.
