The A’s Nick Kurtz hit a tying two-run home run in the seventh against reliever Jordan Leasure. Jacob Wilson scored the winning run on Max Muncy’s sacrifice fly to left field in the 11th.The Sox jumped out to a big lead, scoring five runs in the second.
Montgomery connected on a first-pitch cutter from A’s starter Luis Severino for a 397-foot home run to right to begin the inning.Everson Pereira followed with a hustle double to right, and he advanced to third on a one-out bunt by Chase Meidroth. Tristan Peters walked and Reese McGuire hit a bloop single to left, scoring Pereira.Benintendi ripped a 2-0 high sinker over the right-field wall for a three-run homer, extending the Sox lead to 5-0.The A’s scored once in the second, third and fifth, cutting the lead to 5-3. Sox starter Erick Fedde allowed three runs on two hits with three strikeouts and four walks in 4 2/3 innings.The Sox missed out on multiple scoring chances in the sixth, leaving the bases loaded.The A’s got within 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth.
Muncy tripled just over the head of Pereira in right field and scored on a fielder’s choice when pitcher Sean Newcomb fielded Lawrence Butler’s grounder but couldn’t make the throw to the plate.The Sox briefly regained momentum on a solo home run to center by Murakami leading off the seventh. His seventh homer of the season gave them a 6-4 lead.But Kurtz knotted the score with his two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh. The A’s loaded the bases in the eighth, but Bryan Hudson struck out Tyler Soderstrom to end the threat.The Sox loaded the bases in the ninth, but Sam Antonacci grounded out to first.
The game went to extra innings, where Jordan Hicks made big pitches in the 10th to escape a bases-loaded, one-out jam without allowing a run.The Sox came up empty after loading the bases with no outs in the 11th. Muncy came through for the A’s in the bottom of the 11th to end the 3-hour, 34-minute marathon.
