Following its release, it garnered a primarily positive reception from critics, who lauded everything from the performances to the narrative structure. The Prestige starts streaming on Hulu in May Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, will start streaming on Hulu on May 1, 2026.
Multiple titles are arriving that day, including Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Bride Wars, Sicario, Spy, and The Other Boleyn Girl. An adaptation of Christopher Priest’s 1995 novel of the same name, the story, set in 1890s London, follows two magicians’ assistants, Robert Angier and Alfred Borden, both of whom, along with the former’s wife Julia, work under John Cutter. A bitter rivalry forms between the pair after Julia accidentally drowns during a magic act when Borden makes a mistake.
After establishing separate careers, they each try to outdo one another in creating a teleportation illusion. The film first premiered at the El Capitan Theatre on October 17, 2006, before releasing nationwide in the United States on October 20. Following its release, it grossed an estimated $109 million globally.
Moreover, since then, it has been deemed one of Nolan’s best works. Furthermore, it bagged two nominations at the Academy Awards, including Best Achievement in Cinematography and Best Achievement in Art Direction. In addition to directing, Nolan co-wrote the screenplay with his brother and frequent collaborator, Jonathan Nolan.
He also co-produced with his wife and producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Aaron Ryder. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale star in the lead roles of Angier and Borden, marking the former’s first collaboration with Nolan and the latter’s second, following Batman Begins (2005). Bale would work again with the filmmaker on The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012).
The supporting cast includes Scarlett Johansson as Olivia Wenscombe, Michael Caine as Cutter, Piper Perabo as Julia, Rebecca Hall as Sarah, Samantha Mahurin as Jess, David Bowie as Nikola Tesla, Andy Serkis as Mr. Alley, and Ricky Jay as Milton, among others.
