Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Following internal debates focused on breaking a long-standing leadership stalemate, Iraq’s governing Coordination Framework has chosen Bassem Al-Badri as its prime minister nominee. Al-Badri, the president of Iraq’s Supreme National Commission for Accountability and Justice and a prominent member of Nouri al-Maliki’s Islamic Dawa Party, emerged as the bloc’s pick after talks among key groups. The decision came after a meeting earlier on Monday in Baghdad, when Coordination Framework officials failed to achieve an agreement due to internal coalition disagreements.

The alliance, which comprises powerful political parties, faced opposing bids and internal conflicts that delayed consensus on a single candidate. The nomination of Al-Badri marks a step forward in negotiations, while it is uncertain if the decision can win wider political support within Iraq’s fractured parliament. The move comes at a key juncture, as Iraq strives to establish a government capable of handling economic issues while also managing persistent regional tensions.
