Haruna Sale has emerged winner of the 2026 edition of the Nwonyo Fishing Festival in Taraba State after catching a fish weighing 55.6 kilograms, earning a grand prize of N10 million. Ismaila Yakubu came second with a catch weighing 52.6 kilograms and received N3 million, while Emmanuel Daniel secured third position with a fish weighing 18.2 kilograms. The event, held at Lake Nwonyo in Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba State, attracted tourists and dignitaries from within and outside Nigeria, reinforcing its status as a major cultural and tourism attraction.
Speaking at the festival, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described the event as a vital platform for promoting unity, community cohesion and national integration. Represented by the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, the president commended Governor Agbu Kefas for reviving the festival after years of abandonment. He noted that the governor’s vision aligns with the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in leveraging tourism for sustainable development.
Tinubu also disclosed ongoing efforts to secure global recognition for the festival through UNESCO. Governor Kefas, in his remarks, highlighted the festival’s role in preserving cultural heritage, promoting economic development and strengthening community engagement. He added that increasing international participation reflects Taraba State’s growing reputation as a safe and attractive destination for tourism and investment.
Elder statesman, Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, represented by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, described the revival of the festival as a symbol of unity and a catalyst for economic sustainability. Also speaking, the Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell, commended the initiative and announced plans for cultural exchange. He revealed that Taraba cultural troupes would participate in Africa Emancipation Day celebrations in Grenada to deepen cultural and economic ties. The festival’s highlight—the fishing competition—continues to draw widespread attention, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the people while boosting tourism and economic activities in the state.
