Loosely adapted from a popular sci-fi novel, the film is set in a distant future in which authorities can arrest criminals before they commit a crime. Minority Report to stream on Hulu next month Hulu subscribers will be able to stream Minority Report on the platform from Friday, May 1, 2026 (via Hulu).
The film’s story is loosely based on Philip K. Dick’s 1956 novel of the same name. Steven Spielberg directed the film from a screenplay by Scott Frank and Jon Cohen.
The movie’s cast features Tom Cruise as John Anderton, Max von Sydow as Lamar, Colin Farrell as Danny, Samantha Morton as Agatha, Neal McDonough as Fletch, and Patrick Kilpatrick as Geoffrey, among others. Minority Report takes place in a near-future Washington, D.C., where crime is almost eliminated through a program called PreCrime. This program uses three psychics or “precogs” to foresee murders before they happen.
Precrime chief John Anderton joined the department after his son went missing. But when the precogs predict that Anderton will kill someone, he goes on the run while trying to prove his innocence. His desperate acts unveil a deeper conspiracy.
Years before the film materialized, producer Gary Goldman reportedly wanted to adapt Minority Report as a sequel to his Arnold Schwarzenegger-led Total Recall film. However, it never happened. After years of trying to work together and searching for the perfect script, Spielberg and Cruise collaborated to make Minority Report.
The Jaws director co-produced the film under his banners DreamWorks Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, while the Mission: Impossible star also co-produced it through his production company, Cruise/Wagner Productions. Meanwhile, 20th Century Fox handled the film’s distribution. Released on June 21, 2002, Minority Report left a strong impression on critics and audiences.
As a result, it became a major success on both the critical and commercial fronts. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a Tomatometer score of 89% and a Popcornmeter score of 80%. At the global box office, the film made over $358.3 million against a reported budget of $102 million. It also earned an Oscar nomination for Best Sound Editing.
