Luke Ayling recognises how difficult automatic promotion is now for Middlesbrough after their draw with Ipswich Town.

Middlesbrough's chances of automatic promotion to the Premier League are "probably" over after their 2-2 draw at Ipswich Town on Sunday, according to defender Luke Ayling.Boro were on course for victory until Jack Clarke's contentious late penalty salvaged a point for the Tractor Boys.It extended Boro's winless run to seven matches and kept them in fifth place, but still within three points of Ipswich, who are in second but have a game in hand. However, given that Millwall and Southampton are in between both of those in third and fourth, the Teesside club will need other results to go in their favour to revive automatic hopes. When asked if the draw at Portman Road had ended their chances of joining champions-elect Coventry City in the automatic promotion spots, Ayling told BBC Radio Tees, "Maybe, probably."But we can't think about that right now. We have three games, and we have to try to win those three games and see where that takes us."

Boro's spring slump also means that they are not yet mathematically guaranteed a play-off spot either. They are six points clear of seventh-placed Wrexham with a trip to the Welsh side to come on the last day of the season. But with home matches against Sheffield Wednesday and Watford this week, Ayling is focusing on catching teams above them."We're not thinking about the teams below us," he said. "We're still looking up; we've got nine points to try to win, and we'll be trying to do that."
