They were (along with Jake Davis and Jason Jakstys) the last holdovers of the Chester Frazier/Tim Anderson time at Brad Underwood’s side.
That was the rugged era. That was a “will over skill” era. That was more ground and pound rim bullying than the Sonata Orlando Antigua brought back from Lexington.Without inside knowledge, it’s easy to imagine that perhaps the new staff’s different direction wasn’t the best case scenario for Morez Johnson.
Morez excelled in Illinois’ “dunker” spot as a true freshman. The return of the prodigal Globetrotter diminished the need for a big man to play that style of hoops. It de-emphasized the role in favor of Tomislav Ivisic and his ability to bring Illinois to five-out hoops.Then-redshirting Ty Rodgers had started over 30 games in the 2023-24 season, playing largely in that same dunker spot.
So when fellow Anderson disciple Johnson stepped into Rodgers’ role, Ty took a redshirt. And surprisingly, he had enough goodwill towards the school that supported him and the coaching staff that deprioritized him to return for his fourth year on campus. And then, the bloody injury bug sank his entire season.Nobody knows what post-injury Ty Rodgers will look like. But there was no easy fit for him on the 2026-27 Illinois roster. And that’s where the culture of Illinois started to shift. No longer was the roster built on Terrence Shannon Jr. punishing rims and Marcus Domask backing dudes down from three-quarter court.
There was no more getting the ball up court quickly and firing off shots. The offense became slower. The reads became less scheme-dependent and more matchup-driven.
There was no more bully ball. There was the bittersweet symphony of looking for the elusive gold medal shots and looking like a mid-tier squad when those shots didn’t fall.I’m not saying the Illini roster isn’t tough. I would never accuse these young men of being anything less than extraordinary competitors with enough resilience to bounce back from a team-wide slump and make a Final Four run.No, what I am saying is the grit and grind of Chester Frazier was not a factor in the team’s DNA anymore.
The relentlessness of Tim Anderson’s recruits (Rodgers, Shannon, Morez) was no longer the logo. And Ty Rodgers went from the Dennis Rodman-Lafayette Lever high hoops IQ menace to being deprioritized. The old Illini culture made a deep tourney run in 2024. The new Illini culture made a slightly deeper run in 2026. The retention of 2026 cements the culture of ‘25 as the foundational building block of a program evolving from “solid, top-15 nationally” to “sustained success and nothing less.”The stellar 2026 recruiting class is reinforcing that culture. The pursuit of Stefan Vaaks cements that culture. And now, there will be an entire offseason of questions. What if Illinois landed John Blackwell instead of Vaaks and Stojakovic? What if Illinois chased Alex Constanza instead of Quentin Coleman? What if Brad Underwood and company could have found a good role for Ty Rodgers? When is David Mirkovic going to be a playable character in Fortnite? In the meantime, post your favorite Ty Rodgers memories here in the comments section. Let’s remind the young man how much of an impact he made on Illinois basketball fandom.
