THE RUNDOWN The Testaments is a sequel to the 15-Emmy winning series, The Handmaid’s Tale. The Margaret Atwood novel was released 34 years after the original, and the adaptation stars Chase Infiniti and Lucy Halliday. The Testaments comes out in Australia on April 8 in Australia, arriving on a different streaming service to the one that streamed The Handmaid’s Tale.
For The Handmaid’s Tale fans, the release of The Testaments is one of the more exciting moments on the entertainment calendar for 2026. Following the next generation of Gilead captives (calling them citizens just doesn’t feel right), the series sees Margaret Atwood’s 2019 sequel come to life on the small screen. The Testaments novel was published 34 years after the original, and picks up at a crucial moment as The Gilead Republic is starting to “crumble from the inside”.
It follows two teenaged girls, Agnes (played by Chase Infiniti) and Daisy (played by Lucy Halliday), who come from two entirely different upbringings as they grapple with the world they’ve found themselves in, and need to make tough choices and cunning manoeuvres to ensure their survival. Image: Getty Images The official show synopsis hints to the many violent trials the girls will have to navigate as they find themselves under the watchful eye of Aunt Lydia (played by Ann Dowd) at Gilead’s elite preparatory school for future wives.
Here, obedience is instilled with the kind of brutality we’ve come to associate with the former American state, but naturally, this leads to a trauma bond and personal discoveries about their own family that will change the trajectory of their entire lives. The sequel novel picks up 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, but it’s believed to be a much shorter gap for the TV series, as Handmaid’s went far beyond the events outlined in Atwood’s book. It’s been reported that there will be a gap of about four or five years following the series’ finale.
For most viewers, The Handmaid’s Tale finale felt extremely rushed, not only leaving plotlines open, but creating gaping holes in the series at large. Like, how the hell did Aunt Lydia weasel her way out of the mess she found herself in during season six to rise through the ranks like she has in The Testaments? In the first few episodes, we have already had a few questions answered. For example, we now know that unlike in the book where Daisy is June and Nick’s daughter Baby Nichole, who was smuggled out of Gilead in the original series, that isn’t the case in the series.
Instead, it’s inferred that June is a “mother-like figure” to Daisy, in that she takes her in when her adoptive parents are killed for being members of Mayday. We also know that a next-gen attraction may be taking place, a la Nick and June, between Agnes and her Guardian Garth (played by Brad Alexander) and that he is a member of Mayday. I guess only time will tell what will happen next and whether the series will follow the book, but consider us tuned in.

There’s been no confirmation on whether Elisabeth Moss will be reprising her role of June in The Testaments, and she is not in the novel either. Moss is not listed on the show’s IMDB page, which could suggest that she’s skipping the first season, but I have a hard time believing that June won’t show up at some point.
