The 2022 Offensive Player of the Year stated in a press conference that, "And then for J.J., for somebody to enter that room with that type of ability, that type of talent, he's got to step it up a little bit."The 2x All-Pro wide receiver suffered his worst statistical season of his career in 2025.

With JJ McCarthy at the helm, the Vikings offense sputtered and left Jefferson struggling to make an impact. The rookie quarterback amounted to a measly 1,632 passing yards and 11 touchdowns over 10 contests. Meanwhile, Jefferson put up 1,048 receiving yards over the full 17-game slate.

This type of production was unordinary for Justin. As a result, Minnesota felt the heat and went out and signed former first overall pick Kyler Murray. With Murray in the room, he will be making a strong play at capturing the quarterback job over the struggling sophomore.

While the Oklahoma alum saw his Arizona career come to a quick end, the speedster still has a load of talent. With Murray's skills and abilities entering the room, a lot of pressure will be placed on JJ McCarthy to improve upon his rough rookie season. The Vikings displayed strong faith in him after drafting him with the 10th overall pick in 2024.

Minnesota expected much greater results from the Michigan quarterback and was severely disappointed by his play. After just one year, McCarthy's NFL career will be on the line, and his skill will be tested. The Vikings have no time to waste on a struggling quarterback as they look to contend in 2026 with an overall very talented roster.

Ulitmately, the coaching staff will go with the quarterback that performs better in training camp, even if that means benching the player they drafted in the first round just a year ago. A lot will be at stake for J.J. ahead of the upcoming season.
