It’s time to start planning this year’s summer vacation in Europe. Those sun-bleached promenades, lazy seaside lunches, and the rhythmic sound of waves are calling, but there’s just one problem—the bank has run dry. We get it.

As a family of four, we understand the pressure to provide our children with a fun-filled holiday whilst also keeping an eye on the spending. But after over 16 years of travelling as a family, we’ve learned that you don’t have to forgo a vacation just because you’re on a budget. And fortunately, there are plenty of cheap beach destinations in Europe to choose from if you’re idealising about a European summer this year.

Montenegro, Budva, old town Europe’s coastline has long been known to come with a luxury price tag; think Monaco and its fancy cars and casinos, and Santorini with its priceless sunsets and almost price-unattainable cave house hotels. So we’ve come to the rescue for those families who are willing to look beyond the glossy hotspots to find an affordable hidden treasure, where the water is just as inviting and the gelato just as sweet, but with a cost that won’t hurt your wallet. We’ve mixed a variety of destinations based on our own personal experience, and research backed by Eminent, whose March 2026 study found European beach spots that offer safety, low prices, and entertainment for all family members.

Note: the costs below are per family of four (two adults, two children) per day, and the safety index scores are out of 100, with 0 being unsafe and 100 being no risk to danger at all. Lisbon, Portugal Lisbon, Portugal | Dreamstime Average Family Room Cost: €169 per night Average Meal Cost For A Family: €100 Average Transport Price: €2.75 Family Friendly Attractions: 393 Safety Index: 67.4 On top of the list is Lisbon, which isn’t the cheapest destination, but it has the most family-friendly attractions at an affordable price tag, so if you’re looking for a place that has activities to keep the kids happy, then Lisbon offers it in spades.

Almost 400 spades to be exact. As a coastal city, Lisbon offers families that rare double act: it’s both a vibrant, culture-rich city with history and jaw-dropping architecture, world-class cuisine, and entertainment, and also has some of Europe’s most pristine and accessible beaches within its city limits. Getting around is half the fun as well.

You simply hop on a 20–30 minute train ride, and the coastline unfolds into the calm, golden sands of Cascais. Here you’ll find family-friendly beaches like Praia da Conceição and Praia da Rainha, or for older kids, the surfable waves of Costa da Caparica are all too tempting. Back in the city, Lisbon kids will love the Oceanário de Lisboa, one of Europe’s largest aquariums, where they can see sharks, penguins, and playful otters, or run around in Parque das Nações, an open urban space with a cable car and art exhibits.

What’s more is Lisbon has year-round good weather, with plenty of sun-drenched days to be had, and with just enough Atlantic breeze to keep things comfortable for sightseeing. Málaga, Spain Average Family Room Cost: €233 Average Meal Cost For A Family: €119.78 Average Transport Price: €1.54 Family Friendly Attractions: 101 Safety Index: 69 Most people think of Málaga as a party town where Brits abroad go to enjoy one too many sundowners, but it’s actually much more than that.

It’s the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, it has world-class shopping, and it has undeniably beautiful beaches, not to mention many family-friendly attractions. Málaga has the perfect mix of classic beach escape and culture-infused city break. If you prefer to hit the beaches and learn why this region is aptly named Costa del Sol (coast of sunshine), then head to the city’s urban beach of Playa de la Malagueta, or the calmer shores of Pedregalejo and El Palo, which were made for lazy beach days where children can build sandcastles.

When you’ve had your fill of sand, go for walks through Parque de Málaga, or take day trips to nearby waterparks, zoos, interactive museums, or get a history lesson at the hilltop Alcazaba. Spain is not known to be a cheap country to visit; however, Málaga remains one of southern Europe’s better-value coastal cities with affordable flights with budget airlines like Easy Jet, Ryanair, Jet2, and Wizz Air servicing it, and if you book far enough in advance, you can find reasonably priced apartments. With long, dry days with temperatures hovering around 30–32°C and tempered by sea breezes, the Mediterranean waters of Málaga are waiting.
