Five judges of the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) will settle, once and for all, the issue of jurisdiction in the case against former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte at 5 pm (Manila time). It is Duterte’s strongest argument, and while it has been rejected twice before, human rights advocates remain concerned. The question is novel, after all, and the Appeals Chamber judges are different from those who upheld jurisdiction, or the right of the Court to try Duterte, in October 2025.
Tune in to this livestream starting at 5 pm on Wednesday, April 22, for the Appeals Chamber hearing that will determine the future of the Philippine case before the ICC. If jurisdiction is upheld, the case will proceed, with the next crucial decision expected by the end of April, when the pre-trial chamber rules on whether there is sufficient evidence to go to trial. But if the appeals chamber rules today that the court lacks jurisdiction, Duterte goes home. – Rappler.com
