Finally, Astoria and the Seaside softball teams started league with losses, while the Warrenton girls team faced off with Banks in the battle for league supremacy.Seaside boys golf team soars on front nineFor the front nine on Thursday afternoon, the Seaside boys golf team looked like last year’s team.After shooting a team score of 315 to win the state title a year ago, the new-look Seagulls were on pace to shoot a 314 after the front nine on Thursday afternoon at Gearhart Golf Links.
Ultimately, the Seagulls fell off course on the back nine, but the boys still put together their best performance of the season.The Seagulls shot a season low 329 to outpace Tillamook by 31 shots.Senior Xanh Quang had his best round of the season with a 73. Quang birdied the first hole and was under par until his final putt on Thursday. Freshman Will Haag had a career round as he broke into the 70s for the first time.
Haag shot a 78 despite a double bogey at the 17th and a three putt on 18. Recently promoted Dexter Jenks made an impression in his first varsity round with an 88, Landon Nofield shot a 41 on the front nine to finish with a 90. Gunner Norman was the fifth player with a 98.Head coach Jim Poetsch said his team is getting better every day and showed just how good they can be with their front nine performance.“We are getting better everyday and today were some glimpses of how good this team can be,” Poetsch said in a press release.
“(The score of) 329 is a pretty good score and we did it on greens that were recently aerated, so putts were not rolling as smooth as the kids would have liked.“Xanh was under par from the first hole all the way to the last putt, Will was only three over through 16 holes, Landon played like we know he is capable of on the front nine and Dexter, after moving up from JV this week, came through with a score in the 80s to get us in the 320s. We have about eight guys fighting to get on varsity right now. As soon as we get a few of them to consistently score in the 80s, we will be a team to be reckoned with.”Next up for Seaside is another Cowapa League matchup with Scappoose next Tuesday.Warrenton boys baseball team is solidThe Warrenton boys baseball team bounced back from their game against Taft with two clean victories in league.Monday, the Warriors defeated Neah-Kah-Nie 11-5, behind two hits apiece from Hunter Perrigo, RJ Thornton and Thomas DeJesus.Thursday, the Warriors brought out the thunder as they scored 20 runs in their 20-3 victory over Valley Catholic.
Aaron Neahring was the star in this one as he had three hits, six runs batted in and capped things off with a fifth inning grand slam. Perrigo, Thornton, Ryan Palmer and Duke Anderson also had two hits.Warrenton hosted Horizon Christian on Friday in a makeup game. This game will most likely go a long way towards determining the league champion, as both of these teams are well above any one else in league this season.Then the Warriors will travel to Castle Rock for a Saturday afternoon game.Astoria boys win bigThe Astoria boys baseball team defeated Hoquiam High School of Washington on Thursday night 13-3 at Tapiola Park.The Fishermen improved their record to 3-8 after the five-inning victory.
Astoria accumulated nine hits and first baseman Colt Kelly had a home run to delight the home crowd. He went 2-2 on the day and joined leadoff Sam Schacher in the multi-hit department. Joey Gramlich had two RBIs to help give fellow pitcher Dallas Norris good run support.The Fishermen will host league favorite Scappoose on Saturday at 2 p.m. from Tapiola Park.
The 4A No. 1 Indians are once again set up to be state title contenders, so this will be a great test for the Fishermen.The Knappa baseball boys make quick workThe Knappa baseball team started off league play making quick work of Vernonia with their best win of the season, scoring wise.The 11-1 victory was exactly what Knappa needed to start off on a high note. Knappa entered the league at just 2-6 after a difficult non-league schedule. The two teams are set to wrap up the battle of the Loggers with a Friday double header.Astoria’s softball team blasted by ScappooseThe Scappoose girls showed they are “the class of the 4A softball field” after blasting Astoria 10-0 on Thursday.The Indians offense players had every gear working as they finished the game with 17 hits and 10 runs in just six innings of work.
This improved their record to 12-1 on the year. Scappoose’s only loss was a 5-4 defeat to Marist Catholic during the second game of their double header.
