The huge success of Marvel Rivals' first PvE mode, Marvel Zombies, means the co-op gameplay is not going anywhere any time soon. And thank Khonshu for that. NetEase Games' new spin on co-op PvE is called Blood Hunt, and it's coming this week.
And you know what? It looks even better than Zombies because it's adding vampires along with new boss fights with characters like Werewolf Captain America, Ratatoskr, Dracula, and even Wilson Fisk AKA Kingpin. Screenshot by Destructoid Playable heroes in the mode include The Punisher, Squirrel Girl, Thor, Moon Knight, Jeff the Land Shark, and Blade, all with a swath of four slots to equip gear in that customize your builds with different effects.
This looks like an extension of the round-to-round power-ups available in Marvel Zombies. But most importantly, holy crap, the enemy density looks so satisfying. Marvel Zombies did a good job with that, combining a huge number of enemies with different abilities that enabled someone like Blade to chain attacks endlessly while draining HP in such satisfying ways that NetEase was forced to keep the mode around longer than originally planned due to how popular it became.
It just feels so good to mow down hordes of enemies. Blood Hunt is leaning into the enemy density with large amounts of both vampires (and bats) and zombies, bigger damage numbers popping up all over the screen, and new boss fights with some iconic villains. You can check it out in the trailer below, but basically, it looks like an even better PvE mode than the game had before, and potentially way deeper, too.
This time, it seems to even be leaning into playable lore, too. With Kingpin being teased as the final boss, the mayor of New York seems prepared to exert his will on the heroes to go along with this season's storyline in Manhattan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zd8xPgLCQkw Either way, I'm stoked to give this mode a try. I played Marvel Zombies quite a bit, so if this is an improvement on that, I may be back on Rivals full-time, or at least until this mode gets taken offline after it begins on April 23.
