Construction has begun on a Rs120 million eco-friendly floating jetty at the Korangi Fisheries Harbour Authority, marking an infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving fish landing operations and supporting export-oriented seafood handling. The project was announced by Maritime Affairs Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, who said the facility is expected to be completed by June and will provide improved operational support for small-scale fisherfolk operating at the harbour. A meeting of the Korangi Fisheries Harbour Authority board reviewed the project under the chairmanship of the minister.

The session was attended by Director General Dr Shahid Aslam, Chairman Abrar Asim and other board members. The floating jetty is designed to facilitate smoother offloading of export-quality fish by ensuring continuous access to the water, regardless of tidal fluctuations. Officials said this will help reduce delays in landing and unloading catches and improve overall handling efficiency.

Unlike fixed structures, the jetty will adjust to changing water levels, making it suitable for shallow-water areas where permanent infrastructure is difficult to develop. This adaptability is expected to ensure uninterrupted operations for fishing vessels across varying tidal conditions. Authorities said the improved landing system is expected to reduce turnaround time between fishing trips, allowing fishermen to spend more time at sea while lowering operational costs linked to delays and inefficient unloading processes. The minister said the project is also expected to strengthen economic activity in coastal communities by improving access to markets and enhancing the supply chain for fish destined for export.
