Last week, at CinemaCon, Paramount announced that it was officially moving forward with Top Gun 3, with Tom Cruise returning as hotshot test pilot and occasional piloting instructor Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. Paramount has made clear that another Top Gun sequel was in the works as early as 2024, which isn't surprising. 2022's Top Gun: Maverick, a sequel to the original Top Gun movie from 1986, made 1.5 billion dollars at the box office, a monster hit. Steven Spielberg even thanked Tom Cruise for "saving Hollywood's ass" with the movie during a difficult time for an industry trying to bounce back from the COVID pandemic.
