South Africa’s flagship tourism trade show could be heading for a reset. Image: ATI As reported by Tourism Update, Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille has acknowledged mounting concerns around the organisation of this year’s Africa’s Travel Indaba, while promising a significantly improved experience in 2027. The commitment follows industry feedback raised during a recent stakeholder engagement, where exhibitors flagged ongoing frustrations, particularly around stand allocations and communication timelines.
According to organisers, the sheer volume of applications has slowed the placement process. These delays have created a ripple effect across the exhibition floor. Despite these logistical pressures, early indicators point to strong participation.
More than 600 exhibitors have already been confirmed, alongside buyers from over 70 countries. Thousands of meetings have been scheduled through the event’s platform, signalling sustained demand for the continent’s premier tourism marketplace. Set to take place in Durban this May, Indaba continues to draw tourism boards, small businesses and global buyers into one space.
It remains one of the continent’s most influential platforms for forging partnerships and unlocking market access across Africa’s travel sector. But for De Lille, the focus is shifting beyond the immediate event. She indicated that lessons from this year’s rollout will inform a broader rethink of how Indaba is structured and delivered going forward.
The aim is clear. A more efficient, responsive and globally competitive trade show that better serves both exhibitors and buyers. The stakes are high.
Events like Indaba are not just industry gatherings. They are economic drivers. Tourism remains a key lever for growth, job creation and regional collaboration, particularly as South Africa looks to strengthen intra-African travel and investment.
With planning already underway for future editions, the message from government is direct. Expect change and a more streamlined Indaba next year.
