Bajaj Auto has updated its flagship Pulsar NS400Z with a smaller 349cc engine, aligning it with the brand’s broader shift towards sub-350cc displacement motorcycles. The change appears to be part of a wider strategy to adapt to revised taxation structures, under which several models across Bajaj’s lineup have already transitioned to smaller-capacity engines. The updated Pulsar NS400Z now shares its engine with the Bajaj Dominar 400 in its current form.
The liquid-cooled, single-cylinder motor produces 40.6 HP at 9000 RPM and 33.2 Nm of torque at 7500 RPM. Compared to the earlier 373cc version of the NS400Z, this represents a modest reduction in output, along with a shift in the power and torque delivery higher up the rev range. The reduction in displacement has been achieved by shortening the engine’s stroke, while retaining the same bore dimension.
This results in a more oversquare configuration, which typically favours higher-revving performance characteristics. Peak power now arrives slightly later, while torque delivery is also pushed higher in the rev band, suggesting a more top-end focused riding experience compared to the outgoing version. Apart from the revised engine, the Pulsar NS400Z remains largely unchanged.
Its design, feature list and mechanical components appear to be carried over from the previous iteration. This mirrors the approach seen with other Bajaj models, as well as certain KTM and Triumph motorcycles that have undergone similar downsizing. At present, the Pulsar NS400Z continues to be listed at Rs. 1,93,900/- (ex-showroom, Delhi), unchanged from before the update.
However, given that the Dominar 400 saw a notable price reduction following its transition to a smaller engine, it remains to be seen whether Bajaj will revise the NS400Z’s pricing in the near future. The move positions the NS400Z in line with Bajaj’s updated portfolio, while potentially making it more cost-efficient under current tax norms, even if final pricing adjustments are yet to be confirmed.
