The government has notified new online gaming rules, which will come into effect from May 1. The new rules are expected to provide a boost to esports in the country. The government notification titled 'Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026' said the new laws "position India as a global hub for gaming, innovation and creativity, and at the same time protect society from the financial, psychological and social distress caused by predatory online money gaming platforms.”The rules aim to provide a clear, transparent and time-bound mechanism to determine whether an online game is an online money game (and therefore prohibited) or a permissible online social game or esport. The regulations will also establish the Online Gaming Authority of India as a unified, digital-first regulator for the sector and create a statutory registration regime for esports and such categories of online social games as may be notified.Industry observers believe the new regulations bring the much needed clarity for the entire gaming industry as there is now a distinction between online money games and other esports.Sagar Nair, Head of Incubation, LVL Zero Incubator said, “By clearly distinguishing esports and non-money gaming from online money gaming, the Act creates a more predictable environment for builders to focus on creating high-quality gaming experiences, scalable IPs, and globally relevant products.”Vishal Parekh, Chief Operating Officer, CyberPowerPC India said, “As esports continue to gain prominence in international multi-sport events, this move strengthens India’s position in the global competitive gaming landscape.

With the right ecosystem support from infrastructure to training and hardware access, we can unlock significant economic and talent-driven opportunities for the country."The new regulations also prescribe mandatory user safety features, grievance redressal, and transparency obligations for online game service providers. They also lay down the procedure for inquiry and imposition of civil penalties and an appellate mechanism to ensure accountability, fairness, and observance of the principles of natural justice.Akshat Rathee, Co-founder and MD of NODWIN Gaming said, “India has all the building blocks - a young audience, a strong creator ecosystem, and rising competitive talent to become a global esports powerhouse. With this clarity in place, the focus can now shift towards scaling IPs, strengthening grassroots pathways, and taking Indian esports to the world in a more structured and sustainable manner.”Edited by Swetha Kannan
