Israeli forces killed at least 13 Palestinians on Friday in a series of airstrikes targeting the north and south of the Gaza Strip in the latest deadly violation of the ceasefire that was reached last October. Israel's attacks on the devastated enclave have become more deadly after truces were reached in Iran and Lebanon. Three children and a woman, as well as two police officers are among those killed.
Sources told The New Arab that Israeli military vehicles opened fire in the vicinity of the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, before forces targeted a nearby home with artillery shells. The sources said that two members of the al-Tanani family were killed in the shelling, a mother and one of her sons. Israeli forces also targeted a police vehicle in the al-Mawasi area, Gaza's Civil Defence agency said.
On Saturday morning, a Palestinian child also succumbed to her wounds, days after she was shot by Israeli forces who opened fire from military vehicles in an area west of Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip. She was named as Duaa Muhammed Suleiman Rahim. As the death toll mounted, Hamas issued a statement condemning what it called the "barbaric Zionist attacks that reached all parts of the Gaza Strip since this morning".
The group also denounced the international community's "failure to assume responsibilities towards stopping the ongoing crimes against our people". Israel is violating the truce on a near-daily basis, not only with its deadly airstrikes, shelling, and gunfire but by demolishing homes and restricting aid into the enclave. Despite discussions over moving onto the next phase of the truce, Israel has intensified its onslaught in Gaza.
In response to the spate of killings, Hamas has written to Nickolay Mladenov, the envoy of US President Donald Trump's "Board of Peace", saying that their continued possession of weapons is not the reason for the continued crisis, and that any discussions about their disarmament should only take place once Israeli forces withdraw. The US and Israel say that Hamas must give up their weapons as part of the ceasefire deal, but Hamas has refused to do this so long as Israeli forces continue to occupy Gaza. Hamas however reiterated their commitment to the truce, and said they reject moving onto the second phase of the ceasefire before the terms of the first phase are fulfilled.
The movement also said that Israel had failed to issue any guarantees regarding the terms and its position, making it difficult for the ceasefire to progress. According to Palestinian health ministry in Gaza, the Israeli army has killed at least 984 Palestinians since the truce was agreed on 10 October, making the overall toll from the war around 72,568. The Palestinian ministry of interior also said that at least 27 police officers have been killed by Israel since the October ceasefire, with Israel regularly targeting them in attacks.
The Gaza health ministry's figures also reveal that the number of Palestinians killed in Israel's ceasefire violations have increased by five times since the US and Israel agreed on a ceasefire with Iran. From 8 April to 24 April, the Israeli army has killed 249 Palestinians and wounded 212 others.
