MANILA, Philippines – For the third and final time, the International Criminal Court (ICC) affirms that it has jurisdiction over former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte’s case of crimes against humanity, despite the Philippines’ eventual withdrawal from the Rome Statute. The ICC Appeals Chamber junked Duterte’s appeal on Wednesday, April 22, on the issue of jurisdiction. This ruling clears the roadblock for the possible ICC trial because if the jurisdiction issue went in Duterte’s favor, the cases would have been dismissed and the former president would have been released from detention.
