Many were shocked to see the Los Angeles Rams draft Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the No. 13 overall pick. But one person who wasn't: Matthew Stafford.According to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer, Rams head coach Sean McVay told Stafford before they made the pick that they'd be adding the young quarterback to the room in 2026.Simpson will now slide in behind Stafford as the likely heir apparent to the franchise quarterback role whenever he retires from the NFL. Stetson Bennett is still on the roster, but head coach Sean McVay said he is "considered a backup." There is still a chance the Rams could bring back Jimmy Garoppolo if the veteran doesn't retire. The one-year starter for the Crimson Tide threw for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns with only five interceptions in and completed 64.5% of his passes in 2025.This isn't the win-now move many expected from the Rams with their first-round pick, but the team has a clear plan for the future now. This article originally appeared on Rams Wire: Report: Rams told Matthew Stafford they were drafting QB Ty Simpson
