Brent Jared Cabahug, a teen from Minnesota, paid for an elderly woman’s groceries after her card repeatedly declined at Walmart. The high schooler from the Philippines didn’t hesitate for a moment before expressing his generosity towards the old woman. Stories like Cabahug’s have been highlighted by many netizens.
Many have shared similar stories of good Samaritans paying for strangers’ meals in shopping establishments. Here’s one such instance shared by an X user. WAIT… ??A woman quietly paid for a stranger’s groceries… no recognition… just kindness. Then later she finds out the woman she helped had just lost her mother.Out of ALL the moments… she showed up in that one.You never know what someone is carrying.
You never know… pic.twitter.com/MTi0DosPXC— ? Ames ? (@Real_Ames) April 22, 2026 Recently, a bystander captured a young woman who paid for an elderly woman, just like Cabahug did. In an interview with CBS News’ WCCO, he revealed the reason behind his act of kindness to journalist Erin Hassanzadeh and photojournalist Tony Peterson.
He cited his “household lifestyle” of helping people as the reason behind helping the old woman. Last Tuesday, April 14, 2026, Cabahug was working his usual shift at Walmart as a cashier when he noticed an elderly woman who was “getting frustrated.” This was because her credit card was repeatedly declining at the cash counter. With a line of customers behind her, the repeated beep of a declined card began to frustrate her.
However, that’s exactly when Cabahug jumped in to assist her without a second thought. Neither the cashier nor the elderly woman knew the other; they were total strangers. This reminded the internet of a similar incident in which a stranger covered the bills for the elderly.
Video catches stranger covering bills for old folks in store.Does this restore some faith in people? Your take?pic.twitter.com/fddiB72CzA— Defend the West (@real_DefendWest) April 21, 2026 The teen claimed he did it because he thought it was the right thing to do in that moment. He also clarified, “I don’t do it for any people to give me attention or stuff like that.” Apparently, the old woman whose groceries he paid for had no clue Cabahug had her covered.
But someone was watching the incident unfold in real time. And that was Minnesota Resident, Dani Dircks. And she did something to extend that kindness back to the teenager who works part-time at Walmart.
Moreover, he’s working at the establishment to reportedly save up for nursing school and support his family as much as he can. Witness Dani Dircks Starts GoFundMe for Teen Who Paid for the Elderly’s Groceries As the event unfolded, Dircks was in the same line as the elderly woman with her daughters. Speaking to the CBS News affiliate, she, like him, recalled what she’d witnessed between him and the elderly.
Firstly, Dircks noted the old woman’s frustration as her card repeatedly declined. But what she saw after, with Cabahug, left her in awe. She recalled the teen, a stranger to the old woman, simply paying for her.
Although Cabahug didn’t do it for the attention, Dircks reportedly wanted to give him the attention she thought he deserved. And so, she started a GoFundMe for him and his family. But not before sharing their interaction on her Facebook business page, Sailor Mercy.
Soon, netizens within the area wanted to pitch in and help out the teen with a little generosity of their own. After he reportedly paid $80 for the old woman’s groceries. So far, about $12,733 has been donated by 323 donors for the teen.
This is shy of nearly $2K for the $14K goal set by Dirks. With his story going viral online, it will certainly hit the mark soon. Why was a GoFundMe set up for Brent Cabahug?
According to the GoFundMe page set up by Dircks, the teen was saving to buy his very first car. And so the money donated will go directly towards his dream, and more. Dircks learned from his mother why he’s been working while in high school.
But she also learned of another ordeal involving Cabahug—he was a passionate volleyball player whose career sadly ended. Dircks claimed that the teen broke his leg during a competition, which unfortunately rendered him unable to play the sport further. However, that didn’t dim his spirits, he continued to push forward and is currently working towards saving and paying for nursing school.
The high school senior from Stillwater is reportedly set to graduate later this year. After graduating, he wants to transition to a full-time role to help his mother buy her own house, while also investing in his career as a future nurse.
