Black Clover has had something of a tumultuous ride over the past decade or so; from the start, the series was fairly contentious because of Asta’s perceived obnoxiousness and how much it committed to the typical conventions of action shonen, none of which was helped by Crunchyroll pushing it as “the next king of shonen” at the time. The series never fully outgrew those problems, but over the years, it did learn to properly develop its world and characters, and with great action accompanying it, Black Clover now excels specifically because of how much it commits to shonen cliches.
