The project has also sparked attention after new casting news connected to the wider Aragorn legacy discussion surrounding Mortensen’s past roles. Embers gets cast, first look and production update The film Embers has officially begun shooting in Budapest, Hungary, bringing together a heavyweight ensemble led by Ralph Fiennes and Viggo Mortensen.
The latter is well-known for his stint as Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. Early production images have already been shared, giving the first glimpse of key characters. The project is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker István Szabó and is based on the acclaimed novel by Sándor Márai.
The cast also includes well-known names such as Charlotte Rampling, Katherine Langford, and several international performers like Louis Hofmann and Gijs Blom. The story centers on two former friends, Henrik and Konrad, played by Fiennes and Mortensen. They reunite after many years apart, and the meeting slowly exposes a long-hidden betrayal linked to a woman from their past (via Deadline).

Production has strong industry backing, with Embankment Films handling sales ahead of the Cannes market. The project also reunites several collaborators, including producer Robert Lantos, who has worked with both Szabó and Fiennes before.
Speaking about the casting, Mortensen said, “To have worked alongside Ralph Fiennes for István Szabó on Christopher Hampton’s adaptation of Sándor Márai’s beautiful novel has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” He added, ”I couldn’t have asked for a more inspiring challenge.” Behind the camera, the film brings together an experienced crew, including composer Mychael Danna and cinematographer Dániel Garas. According to the production team, the film is designed as a tense “psychological duel” between its two leads, focusing heavily on emotion, memory, and unresolved history.
