Coming into the draft, the Saints needed to address TE at some point, and although it as a bit of a surprise for the selection to happen on day 2, it was a great one.

Delp was not a productive player in college, but it was not really his fault. Georgia used him more as a blocker, though he can be used as a receiver sometimes. This hurt his production, but when he got the ball, it made no sense why Georgia was doing this. Many draft analysts have pointed out that Delp is likely to be one of those players who is much better in the NFL than he was in college.

He is very athletic, can make big plays happen after the catch, will outrun defenders, can make tough catches, and is an excellent blocker. The potential Delp brings is extremely exciting, and although Juwan Johnson will be TE1, Delp will be able to get on the field right away. Focusing on his blocking, this is a big part of his game that could have pushed the Saints to draft him.

Walking into this TE room, Delp is by far the best blocker, which has been an issue in Johnson’s game, especially last season. After adding Travis Etienne, getting a blocker that is a reviving threat like Delp opens up his game so much, and will make the entire offense play better.
